Go with the Flow.

"Plodding wins the race."

Today was a day to simply plod. My student had a stomachache and so I gave him options, with the exceptions of fables. I want to be introducing at least one new lesson each session. He chose fables first and did well, we did two together, and he discovered the moral of the last two on his own. We then moved to reading an edition of Shortcuts about motorcycles, he read that easily and we then had a race to see who could find the words first. After that we read several entries out of the Book of World Records and he journaled about the record that was most surprising to him. At the end we worked on sight vocabulary and had a brief vocabulary quiz. So, even though he wasn't reading poetry or the book about having a career in racing, I was happy with the change of pace, and I think that he also enjoyed doing some new activities.

  1. Well, "slow and steady wins the race." I'm glad that though it was a "slow" day, it was still productive for you. There's a variety of things we can do with our students, so maybe it's a good way for your student to find what works well (or not as well) for him.

  2. I remember watching that cartoon when I was younger. I rooted for the tortoise. I guess it was because he took his time and never gave up. Unlike the hare who seemed to brag and rushed through the race. That story had a good moral. Teaching kids about values are things we should incorporate in our lessons.

  3. Erik,
I think it's great, you keeping your student both busy and entertained! It just makes learning fun and interesting. Motivation is key in keeping him going and going...and going! Have fun!

  4. That you incorporated a fable as part of your lesson, shows the creativity in you. You kept your student motivated by introducing a new twist to developing his literacy skills. Way to go!
