Learning in More Ways than One

You don't understand anything until you learn it more than one way.
Marvin Minsky
Today's session proved to be one of those days where my many years of teaching experience didn't provide me the assurance that my session would go smoothly. While last week's was awesome, this time around my student struggled with the basic letter-sound recognition that the majority of fourth grade students take for granted. And because my training and instinct kicked in, as an educator I knew better than to feel frustrated with the lack of this simple task by my student. But, who was I kidding? I am only human, and frustration is a human emotion, so there, I've put it out there for my MAGEC team to comment on. Don't worry, I won't get offended should you decide to give me a piece of advice; I promise.
But, just the same way that I wasn't too thrilled about today's session, like the true professional that I am (I think!), I'll pick up the "pieces" and get back on my feet, and do what I know best to help my student progress, and that's to TEACH! After all, as teachers, we all know that there is more than one way that a child can learn; so if he can't learn through a certain way, then I'll try other ways.

  1. Life's just like that, Geri. One day you're up, the next day you're down. But I guess we can rest assured that we won't be down for long--and while we're down, at least we have a great MAGECal support team to help us. I don't have the elementary background to give suggestions, but I do agree that looking into whether he has dyslexia or something that presents similarly sounds like a good idea.
Oh, and you ARE a professional AND an awesome Reading-Specialist-in-the-making!

  2. Geri I remember when we all started our first day of ED643 last fall. I had mentioned to the group about my struggles with my Reading group and how many of them struggle with reading. To top it off, quite a number of them had behavioral problems as well. Although we encounter times of frustration, it's work in progress. You're an excellent teacher. You should take credit for all that you are doing for your student:)

  3. Geri I hear you! here I am at the Literacy Center (Tuesday) doing make-up session with my student. I picked him up and I have to drop him home...but that's okay, at least he's here. He constantly uses the restroom, but that's okay, I get to catch up with work. I have to make payment for him, but that's okay so are the other teachers. The sacrafices we make end will make up for it twofold!! Keep up the great work!
